| Background Information | The SURF1 protein in humans is involved in the assembly of cytochrome c oxidase (COX), also known as complex IV, which is a key enzyme in oxidative phosphorylation. SURF1 is located within the inner mitochondrial membrane and is part of a larger complex called the MITRAC complex. Mutations in the SURF1 gene are associated with Leigh syndrome and some forms of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. |
