| Background Information | Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is a member of the IL-1 cytokine family and functions as both a nuclear factor and an extracellular cytokine. Encoded by the IL33 gene on chromosome 9p24.1, IL-33 is constitutively expressed in epithelial and endothelial cells at barrier tissues, such as the lung, skin, and gastrointestinal tract. IL-33 is a key regulator of type 2 immune responses, and it plays a crucial role in the activation and recruitment of Th2 cells, group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s), mast cells, basophils, and eosinophils. It is particularly implicated in diseases characterized by allergic inflammation, such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis. |
