Gemtuzumab is a monoclonal antibody designed to target CD33, a protein found on the surface of myeloid cells, particularly in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells. This antibody is often used in the form of an antibody-drug conjugate (ADC), where it binds to CD33 on leukemia cells and delivers a potent cytotoxic agent, ozogamicin, directly to the targeted cells, inducing cell death. The targeting of CD33 allows for more precise treatment, minimizing damage to healthy tissues compared to conventional chemotherapy.
